A while ago we were asked to offer a post on lunch boxes. I know that in my house preparing lunch boxes keeps us very busy. The healthy options are not always the most popular with my little ones. It’s definitely a challenge to find things that are healthy, sustaining and appealing. I like to offer a bit of variety, so I am always looking for new ideas. Here is a list of 20 ideas for filling the lunch boxes.
Filling the lunch boxes
Many of you will include a sandwich and you might like to read our previous post Munch Boxes; which give some ideas for how to build a healthier sandwich. Some of these ideas may also be of interest to you:
- Carrot sticks and something to dip them into
- Cold pasta
- Mini sandwiches: cut them with your cookie cutters for something a bit different
- Sushi
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Yoghurt pots
- Dried fruits and seeds: cranberries, apricots, dates, prunes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
- Mini quiche or little pastries
- Fruit purees in tubes (these can even be frozen)
- Snap peas, mange tout or good old frozen peas
- Fruit bread or toast or mini muffins
- Plain, unsalted corn chips and a dip
- Chicken drumsticks or cold cooked sausages
- Grapes, strawberries and blueberries – or easy fruits to pack and pick at
- Sliced pear doesn’t seem to brown in the way that apples do
- Popcorn
- Cheese and crackers
- Homemade muesli bars or nut balls
- Tasty toast fingers
- Fruit or nut balls such as this no bake apricot and nut ball
