In my last two posts about starting solids, The First Phase and Easy Purees, I have shared some hints and tips on how to introduce your baby to solids with hopefully as little stress as possible for both parent and baby. In this post I focus on introducing meat to your baby and share a yummy puree recipe which I am sure your baby will love, a pork, pear and pea puree.

I found weaning Freddie went along fine until I introduced meat  around 7 months old. I didn’t introduce meat until then mainly because as I new mum I followed the advice in parenting books rather than having the confidence to do things my way. By 7 months Freddie had had 2 months of yummy sweet, fruity purees and wasn’t taken with the metallic flavour and grainier texture of meat purees. To try and avoid this problem with Lottie I introduced meat much sooner, I also introduced lentils at this stage.

The guidelines provided by New Zealand, Australia and the UK suggest introducing meat from 6 months onwards. There is no stipulation that you need to wait until later. It is recommended, and made sense to me to introduce some soft vegetables and fruits first as these are easily digestible. This also means that when you introduce meat you can add it to foods your baby has shown that enjoy already so that they are more likely to accept the new flavour. Including either apple or pear in the puree should help sweeten a meat puree and make it more palatable for your baby.

Starting solids, introducing meat

From 6 months onwards when your baby needs more iron and zinc, it is recommended by health professionals, to aim to introduce your baby foods containing these nutrients. The best sources are considered to be meat and vegetarian alternatives although you can also offer fortified cereals. I posted a series on Iron a while ago which you might find helpful and interesting and also included some more tips on introducing meat.

Here are is another puree recipe that I hope your baby will enjoy as much as Lottie did! These recipes will make around 4 meals for a baby eating about 1/3 – 1/2 cup serving size. I often made Lottie’s meat purees using part of our family roast – this makes for less work in the kitchen and enables you to eat as a family, something I really value and enjoy.

Pork, Pea, Pumpkin and Pear Puree
  • 1 medium jacket potato
  • 80g beef chunks, mince or roast
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 medium apple
  1. Peel and chop the pumpkin and pear and place in a sauce pan just covered with water.
  2. Meanwhile cook the pork by frying in a little oil or use some of the family roast.
  3. When the pumpkin and pear are nearly cooked (around 10 mins) add the peas and cook for a further 3 or 4 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat and place the vegetables into a container for blending. Do not drain the water away!
  5. Blend all the ingredients. Add the cooking water bit by bit to achieve the consistency desired.
  6. Cover and cool then freeze into portions immediately.
