I totally love this book Follow the Firefly. It is beautiful to look at with lovely water colours and delightful characters and although it has absolutely no words, it has a twist in its tail.

Follow the Firefly

Follow the Firefly by Bernardo Carvalho is a very clever book because it is in fact two wonderful wordless books in one.

From front to back you can follow the firefly on its search for a flashing light in one direction. Then start at the other end of the book and follow the story of the rabbit’s escape in Run, Rabbit Run. On each page the lively and bright illustrations contain both stories – each moving in the opposite direction.

I love the idea that the “story” is in part up to imagination of the readers and viewers. Because you provide the text, this is a book where the story you read could be different every time, there is space for imagination, creativity and exploration. What a wonderful idea. I totally love it.

So tell us more about Book Island?

Greet Pauwelijn is based in Raumati and is the founding publisher of Book Island, a New Zealand-based publishing house with a bold dream of enriching children’s and adults’ lives in the English-and Dutch-language market. Book Island brings unique stories from Europe to our shores, using the best talent to translate, design and print beautiful high-quality books.

When selecting new titles for books with Greet is looking for books that:

  • are a perfect match between story and illustrations
  • have strong, resilient and inspiring characters
  • have layers, which allow the readers, young and old, to discover new elements in the story and illustrations with each reading
  • have stories that preferably reflect cultural diversity and address important topics

The biggest challenge for Greet is finding titles that work both in the English and Dutch-language market, since they are quite different. You can tell from the quality of the Book Island stable of books including Maia and What Matters, that she takes this job very seriously.
