Education for our children is such an important step in their life. But here’s the thing we don’t have enough teachers! Why? Because well they are simply unappreciated and underpaid. I don’t know about you but we here at Munch Cupboard do not like this one bit. NZEI said:
We currently have a growing teacher shortage crisis already showing itself in our schools, which looks set to worsen with growing student numbers and less people training to become teachers.
So what can we do? Well, we can campaign for better rights for our teachers and keep campaigning until something changes. Speaking of campaigns here is one you can actually sign right here, right now to make a change.
What else has been happening?
Well there was a nation wide strike all around New Zealand in November but unfortunately an agreement was not found.
Principles are having to make cuts which is not ok, but it’s all because they do not have the budget. Here’s what was on NZEI’s website:
We asked principals how their 2018 budgets were shaping up. We’ve learned that many are planning to make cuts to teacher aides’ hours and positions just to make ends meet for their schools. Meanwhile, there just aren’t enough teachers to fill positions or do relieving work.
Because of staff cuts the stress that principals are put under is extremely harsh! NZEI had this to say:
Principals’ workloads are becoming more and more complex, and with that complexity comes an even greater workload. We’ve commissioned an ongoing study into principals’ health and wellbeing.
This is just some aspects of what’s going on in the teaching world. If you want to read more then we recommend you check out NZEI’s website. The welfare of our teachers is too important for us not to care. We need to protect them to be able to offer our children the best education possible.
Be the change that you want in the world.
